History & Restoration
Restoration of the Windmill and Passas Wells is being investigated and contact has been made by AFK with the Archaeological Society in Rodos to assist.
This project will involve the appointment of a suitably qualified Archaeological Architect to present a restoration project on behalf of AFK.
We are also consulting with the Sydney based, Kastellorizian Restoration Committee which has expressed interest in assisting.
Empire Patrol Project
AFK is pleased to announce that with our encouragement, the Municipality of Megisti has resolved to commemorate in 2010, the 65th anniversary of the fateful sinking of the Empire Patrol. It was on the 29th September, 1945 the refugee ship, The Empire Patrol left the harbour of Port Said, Egypt enroute to Kastellorizo when it caught fire and sank taking the lives of 33 Kastellorizians. (For more information about the disaster visit www.empirepatrol.com)
Alexandros Zygouris, the resident artist on Kastellorizo informs us that the sculpture commemorating this event is progressing well. Upon completion, the monument, with the names of the people who lost their lives will be located on the harbour of Kastellorizo, near Aghios Giorgos tou Pigadiou (St George of the Well) church and will be officially unveiled at the 65th anniversary ceremony on 29 September 2010.
The sculpture is from a block of beautiful white marble about 90 cm high and about 50cm x 50cm. It will be placed on a plinth about one metre high.
AFK is assisting with the raising of funds for this project and is aiming to collect AUD$10,000. Please note these funds will be paid direct to the sculptor and we are pleased to advise that we have already received some generous donations from Kastellorizians wishing to commemorate their loved ones.
If any of you would like to make a contribution, especially if your family was involved in this tragedy to honour their memory, please contact the AFK Co-ordinator, Marilyn Tsolakis at coordinator@australianfriendskastellorizo.org
